Westchester Flames Open Home Schedule on Saturday

For Immediate Release:

(New Rochelle, NY) - The Westchester Flames (0-0-1, 1 point) open their 2004 home campaign, this Saturday, May 1, 5:30 PM at City Park Stadium, 5th Avenue in New Rochelle, NY, against the New Hampshire Phantoms. As the 2003 Northern Division champion, the Phantoms were ousted, by a 4-3 aggregate score, in the first round of the playoffs by the Flames. This will be the first match of the season for the Phantoms. The Flames look to continue their winning ways since moving to City Park in 2001, having brought home the 2001 PDL Championship, and PSL 2nd Place in 2003.

Excited about the prospects for this season, Coach Gus Skoufis said, "We obviously want to make it back to the championship game, but this time, with a different outcome. I believe we have gone out and found the talent to do just that."

The Flames opened their season a week ago when playing the Long Island Rough Riders in the first of three meetings in 2004. Forward Evaud Thompson scored in the 43rd minute off a cross from midfielder Fredy Nava. Goalkeeper Guillermo Valencia (pictured) kept a clean sheet until literally the final seconds of added time when the Riders were able to score off a corner kick to tie the game, giving both teams one point in their quest for Open Cup qualification. Both Thompson and Valencia were named to the PSL Team of the Week for their efforts.

This game also serves as a qualifying match for the US Open Cup competition. Six (6) teams from the Pro Soccer League will qualify to participate in the 2004 U.S. Open Cup Tournament. The league designates four games (2 home and 2 away) played before May 23rd as Open Cup qualifying games. The top five teams based on total points earned in these qualification games plus the 2003 Pro Soccer League Champion Wilmington Hammerheads will earn a spot in the 2nd Round of the 2004 U.S. Open Cup Tournament on June 15th.

The gates will open at 4:30 PM, with tickets going on sale at that time. Ticket prices are $8 for adults and $5 for children under 16. Group rates are available. For more information, call 888-W-FLAMES (935-2637). New Flames merchandise will be available for sale at the field. Be sure to come by and see what we have to offer.
