Westchester Flames U20 Men recount their experience at the 2011 USL Super-20 League North American Finals presented by Umbro held in Tampa, FL from July 21-24, 2011

New Rochelle, NY - As the team’s first appearance in the 2011 USL Super-20 League North American Finals presented by Umbro to be held in Tampa, FL from July 21-24, 2011, players and coach reflect their experience. The team was unable to break out of their bracket in the round robin competition. They had an even split of 1 win, 1 loss, and 1 tie. However, the experience of making it to the Finals had a positive impact for the Westchester Flames players on the team and coach.
When asked to all the players on the U20 Men’s team how was their experience, they were all unanimous and agreed it was a great experience with high level competition, all were happy to be at Finals and had fun as well as looking forward to returning next season either for U20 or PDL for the 1991’s that have aged out.
Head Coach, Joao de Souza said, "It was wonderful to be here at USL North American U20 Finals. All the teams that were here are very good and deserved to be here as the competition level was very high. I enjoyed coaching this team am I looking forward to coming back to Tampa in December with my U17 Boys team that qualified for Finals as well."
U20 team captain, Sean Reilly ’91 added, "It was great to play for Westchester Flames U20 team. The experience of meeting and playing with such a diverse group of players who all had different styles of play as well as the coach who also had a different style of coaching made this summer’s competition very enjoyable. Also, making it to the Finals, I believe gave a good name for the club and a good experience for us all to realize what we need to do and achieve for this level of competition. I will definitely be back next year to tryout for the PDL team.
Thomas Manz ’92 continued, "This was everyone’s first experience here at Finals. We all tried to win and the experience was very positive. Next year, we have the U17’s coming up along with the 92’s and 93’s coming back. I believe with all the good talent along with the experience of the returning players will make next season even stronger.
Abdul Umar ’93 reflected, "Personally this was a good experience for me. I will be heading off to Villanova University in the Fall and this summer’s competition prepared me what to expect in this next level of my soccer career. I truly enjoyed this".
The team’s youngest member of the squad 16 years old, Neil Williams ’95 said, "I liked the experience of being with the older players and able to watch the games on the bench with them. I learned alot and I was very happy to have been given the opportunity to play one game at Finals where we tied the game."
USL came out with the club’s rankings for U20 programs and Westchester Flames made it for the top 11. The club was ranked # 8 in North America. An enormous accomplishment as the club is young and growing always trying to improve each year.
Westcehster Flames will continue to provide U20 Men and Women competition for the upcoming 2012 season.
